Power Strip FAQs

Find clear answers to common questions about power strips, including surge protection, placement, and daily use—so you can choose the right solution with confidence.

Q1: What is the difference between a regular power strip and a surge protector?

A basic power strip only provides extra outlets, while a TESSAN Surge Protector includes a built-in MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) circuit that absorbs excess energy from voltage spikes. This protects your sensitive electronics (like PCs or TVs) from being fried during lightning storms or grid fluctuations.

Q2: How many Joules of surge protection do I actually need?

It depends on what you're plugging in. For basic lamps or small clocks, 500-1000 Joules is sufficient. For home office setups or gaming rigs, TESSAN recommends at least 1500-2000+ Joules to ensure robust protection over the product’s lifespan.

Q3: What are the benefits of a "45-Degree Flat Plug" design?

Standard plugs stick out several inches, preventing furniture from sitting flush against the wall. Flat lugs are only about 0.35 to 0.5 inches thick and angled at 45 degrees. This ensures they don’t block the bottom outlet of a duplex wall socket and allow you to hide the power strip easily behind bookshelves, desks, or nightstands.

Q4: Can I plug high-power appliances like space heaters or AC units into a power strip?

Generally, No. High-wattage appliances (1500W+) should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Most power strips are rated for a total of 1875W/15A. "Daisy-chaining" or overloading a strip with heavy appliances can cause overheating. TESSAN power strips include an Overload Protection Switch that automatically trips to cut off power if the current exceeds the safe limit, preventing fire hazards.

Q5: Are TESSAN power strips wall-mountable?

Most of our models include integrated keyhole slots on the back for easy wall mounting. This allows you to secure the power strip under desks, on workbenches, or behind TV centers, significantly improving cable organization and keeping power access within arm's reach.

Q6: What makes a power strip "Cruise Ship Approved"?

Cruise lines (like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Disney) strictly prohibit surge protectors because they interfere with the ship's electrical systems. The Cruise-Approved Power Strips are specifically designed without surge protection to ensure they pass through port security while still giving you the extra outlets you need in a cramped cabin.
